A Schoolground Solution
Meeting the times with an optimistic outlook
Towards the end of the pandemic in New York, as schools began to reopen, there was an issue concerning the arrangements for children before school, during lunch, and group classes due to social distancing measures. Brooklyn’s PS8 sought assistance despite having a limited budget. I devised a design that not only provided protection from the elements but also offered a sustainable solution that could be repurposed after the pandemic. The school required 5 structures, and my design allowed for two structures to be combined. Using the materials from the remaining structures, the school could construct a greenhouse with box planters inside to facilitate gardening and educate about sustainable practices. After fabricating all the pieces and delivering them to the school, a team of students and teachers volunteered to assemble the structures.
This collaborative effort was enjoyable, and what's even better, the school now boasts a thriving gardening club 3.5 years later.
